Percentages are everywhere, in salary hikes, GST invoices, fund returns, exam scores, and grocery bills. This calculator handles the three most common percentage questions, what is X percent of Y, what is the percent change between two values, and what percent is one number of another.

Mode 1: Percent of a value

Multiply the percent by the value and divide by 100. So 15 percent of 2,000 equals 0.15 times 2,000, which is 300. This mode is useful when you want to know GST on an invoice, the tip at a restaurant, or the down payment on a property.

Mode 2: Percent change

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the absolute old value, and multiply by 100. A move from 1,000 to 1,250 is a 25 percent rise. From 1,000 to 800 is a 20 percent drop. This is the right tool for measuring salary hikes, share price moves, and price comparisons.

Mode 3: X is what percent of Y

Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. If you scored 78 on a test out of 90, that is 78 divided by 90 times 100, which equals 86.67 percent. This mode also works for share of revenue, budget portions, and progress towards a goal.

Frequently asked questions

A move from 5 percent to 7 percent is a rise of 2 percentage points but a 40 percent rise in relative terms. Always check whether a number is being expressed in absolute or relative form.
